Mecenaics are small, shelled, mollusclike people from Xofirth with psychic abilities and flexible bodies. Barring an earlier death, their lives last exactly 101 years, a biological mystery that shapes their relationship with time. Many organise education, work and service through carefully planned phases of life. Their urgency need not mean recklessness; survival matters when every remaining year is countable. A lengthy committee meeting can consequently feel like a measurable subtraction from existence.
