Maraquois come from Marata and have seven reproductive genders, all contributing to their species' reproductive process. Family and relationship networks therefore develop along lines unfamiliar to many visitors. Their societies have long worked with their world's complex environment, and contact with wider civilisation has produced varied responses to new ideas and technology. Some communities prize continuity, others experimentation. Neither their sophisticated social lives nor their ecological expertise is adequately explained by calling them isolated moon-dwellers.
