Copaxis are colonial organisms whose coral-like polyps form a single person. On Tabrid Minor, their people once lived in floating cities sustained by a close relationship with gravity-linked copi. Exploitation, industrialisation and civil war shattered much of that heritage and devastated the environment. Modern copaxis face the task of deciding what to preserve, repair or reject. Their story offers invention and resilience alongside a difficult question: what does progress mean when the bill finally arrives?
