Vlakas are wolflike people from Lajok, with thick fur, keen scent and a strong tradition of mutual support. Blind, deaf and deafblind vlakas are common, and their communities reflect a broad range of sensory experiences. Many became spacefarers as their world's sun faded; its unexpected renewal has opened new possibilities. Their cultures show how collective life can accommodate difference as an ordinary fact. A vlaka might understand the mood of a room before anyone has spoken.
